Before forming Toto its members were session musicians for Steely Dan[3] Seals and Crofts[4] Boz Skaggs, Sonny and Cher. [5] Guitarist Steve Lukather was the band's lead singer.
About Toto
Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio players working with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word which means "all inclusive," the group was intent on exploring every musical style.
In 1981, Toto's third album Turn Back was a flop however, they bounce back with their fourth release Isolation which contains two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour make them a household name around the world.
After a short hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is different from the ballads of previous albums, and features some heavy rock. The album was their first to go platinum in North America.
In the course of recording the fifth album, the group loses its manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to record a new album and change their name with an entirely different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, replaces Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a major tour across the globe. After a few weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. The album features a cover of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band covering Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring group is comprised by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

Kingdom of Desire was another successful album. After a world tour, Bobby Kimball quit the group. He was replaced by Fergie Frederiksen, formerly of Le Roux. The band continued with their fifth studio album, Isolation. The album contained a variety of songs, including "Stranger in Town".
After Isolation Toto was put on a break. This gave each member of the group the opportunity to explore their own solo projects. In 1996, the band was reunited to tour and release an album. This was the first time that all original members were on stage together for more than 10 years.
The following year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time all of Toto's original members appeared together on stage at the same time. The band broke up following this. Toto reunited for an event benefiting the ALS Foundation in 2010. to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time that all original Toto members appeared performing together for more than 31 years. In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

Toto is one of the most popular bands in rock music. They have had megahits like "Rosanna," Hold The Line," and "Africa," which has been certified platinum 8X. The group's anthemic, arena-rock style is influenced by a variety of styles that include progressive rock, world rhythms, soul, and jazz.
The band was hit with several setbacks during their later years, despite their acclaim. In 2002 keyboardist David Paich and drummer Greg Phillinganes were forced to take a medical leave of absence. Shem von Schröeck was brought in to replace him however, the group wasn't the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, Toto decided to take a break from touring after a string lineup changes and a disappointing series of releases. However, the group resumed touring in 2012 following the release of their album, 40 Trips Around the Sun.
The album marked a return to the band's best form, and the tour that accompanied it featured sold-out concerts in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
